The Inaugural Thomasville Mahjong League Championship
On a beautiful April evening in Thomasville, the excitement was palpable as the Thomasville Mahjong League hosted its first-ever championship playoffs. After eight weeks of spirited competition, four members had earned their way to the final table: Diana Cone, Heidi Davis, Suzanne Cognetta, and Rainey Cauley.
With the sun setting and a gentle breeze sweeping across the porch, league members, friends, and even a few proud spouses gathered to witness the showdown. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation, camaraderie, and the signature clack of mahjong tiles.
Each finalist brought her own style and strategy to the table, showcasing the skill and sportsmanship that have come to define the league since its founding. As the hands progressed, so did the intensity- keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.
Suzanne Cognetta came out strong, winning the first two games. But with Diana Cone taking the third game, the championship was still very much up for grabs. Everything came down to the fourth and final game. Diana won the fourth game, but it was Suzanne’s high scores that secured the title. With that, Suzanne Cognetta was officially declared the Mahjong Maven of the season and the league’s very first champion! As the final game was called and scores tallied, the applause rang out- not just for Suzanne’s well-earned victory, but for the entire league and what it has come to represent. One thing was clear: this is only the beginning for the Thomasville Mahjong League.
The Thomasville Mahjong League Championship wasn’t just about crowning a winner—it was a celebration of community, friendship, and the growing love for this timeless game. The evening marked an unforgettable milestone and a thrilling first chapter in what promises to be a long tradition of championship play.
